Types of Water Damage

• Category 1 – often referred to as “clean” water and contains no contaminants.  Examples of damages from clean water sources may include:

• Broken water supply lines or pipes
• Tub or sink overflows
• Cracked or broken toilet tanks containing no contaminants or chemical additives

• Category 2 – Unsanitary or “grey water” containing some degree of contamination.  Category 2 water may carry microorganisms, or chemicals and could cause sickness or adverse health effects if consumed or with prolonged exposure.  Examples of causes of category may include:

• Soapy and rinse water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines
• Wastewater overflows from toilets not containing fecal matter or bloodborne pathogens
• Broken aquariums
• Water beds containing chemicals
  

• Category 3 - Referred to as “black” water and contains pathogenic agents.  Unsanitary “black” water sources are those caused by sewage or contaminated water entering a structure.  Sewage includes but is not limited to:

• Feces matter and urine
• Dangerous chemicals or wastes
• Bloodborne pathogens
• Water from rivers, streams, and lakes.

The category of any water source can change as it comes into contact or mixes with other surfaces, materials, or water sources.
