The Norwalk virus or Norovirus (virus that causes stomach flu) can survive on an uncleaned carpet for a month or more.

Microbiologists have identified air blown from a running vacuum cleaner as one of the five places in the home that has the highest number of germs. Other places include dish sponges, washing machines, bathroom toilets during a flush, and kitchen trash cans.

Each year, several pounds of soil can accumulate in and under a carpet.

The 5-second rule is a myth: bacteria can live after 4 weeks on carpet. And, thanks to “microbial adhesion”, germs such as the following are immediately transferred to food: Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella enteritis (bacterium that causes horrible diarrhea and vomiting) and Campylobacter (causes bloody diarrhea, periodontitis or dysentery syndrome).

Bed bugs can live in carpet fibers and wooden floorboards. For their size, they are extremely fast and can crawl more than 100 feet to obtain a blood meal, usually at night from people who are sleeping. Engorgement takes about 3-10 minutes yet people rarely realize they are being bitten.

A person sheds about 1.5 million skin flakes an hour, most which becomes embedded in our carpets.

Carcinogens in cigarettes may accumulate in household carpet. Because dogs and cats, as well as children and infants, spend a great deal of time on the floor, they may be at risk for developing lung cancer in households with cigarette smokers.

Reports of families falling ill with gastrointestinal problems because of leaky vacuum cleaners that re-deposited Salmonella germs from the carpet into the household air.

Stachybotrys chartarum is a house mold that grows on wet carpeting. It produces mycotoxins which causes dermatitis, mucosal irritation and immunosuppression.

After learning these facts, getting your carpets cleaned seems like something you would need to do to keep your home and family healthy. With Green Clean’s carpet and upholstery cleaning as well as our smoke and water damage restoration, we can keep your home and family healthy and clean.

“Restoring Healthy Environments” is what we do!

Spring – the annual clean house season, but also the time to celebrate young graduates from high school and college. Preparing your home in anticipation of the attendance of multiple guests for graduation parties moves us into a frenzy to clean anything and everything, carpets included.

Although often overlooked with the frenzy of chair and table rentals, menus and invitation send-outs, carpets are one of your home’s largest thriving environments for dust, bacteria and other allergens as well as odor and pet dander. This can easily be cleaned with eco-friendly products that thoroughly scrub the carpet and rinse it completely of any residue.

Regular carpet maintenance increases longevity, indoor air quality as well as keeps up-to-date warranty schedules on carpets 2007 and newer. Clean carpets bring out the happiness in all of us, including those nit-picky relatives soon to be attending your son/daughter’s graduation party.

Sun is out until dinner time. The tulips and flowing trees are blooming. Your windows and doors are open allowing a fresh breeze into your home. The grass is green on your side of the fence. Your nose is running. You are sneezing. Your eyes are watery and itchy. Which of these aspects of spring are least enjoyable?

Seasonal allergies often stimulated by pollens and outside dust can also include dust mites, pet dander and molds. In Minnesota, four months of a closed home can create a multitude of bacteria, dust and dander to lay dormant in your carpet; once the windows and doors open to let in the spring breeze and the humidity, the dormant allergens “spring” to life, causing the itchy, watery eyes, and runny, sneezing nose.

Although often a grueling chore, spring cleaning is essential in getting the home ready for the new season ahead. We routinely wash windows and screens, replace cool weather clothing for warm weather clothing, flip mattresses and go on a mad dusting spree. We check our furnaces and air conditioning units to see if we need to replace or clean the filters. But how often do we think to clean our carpets, our air vents and ducts? Carpets and ducts can hold a considerable amount of allergens and should be a part of the annual spring cleaning.

Basement waterproofing is a safe and reliable way to combat basement water seepage, sump pump malfunctions, and sewer/septic system failures. Basement waterproofing is needed anytime a structure is built at ground level or below ground level. Considerations should be made in cases where ground water is likely to build up in the soil and can raise the water table. This higher water table causes hydrostatic pressure to be exerted underneath basement floors and against basement walls.

Hydrostatic pressure forces water through cracks in the foundation walls, through openings caused by expansion and contraction of the footing-foundation wall joint and up through floor cracks. This pressure can cause major structural damage to foundation walls and is likely to contribute to mold, decay and other moisture-related problems.

Green Clean’s water damage restoration service follows a step-by-step process that will not only disinfect and sanitize the area after a complete structural drying, but it also detects water beneath floor coverings, within walls, wood framing, insulation and sheetrock. Green Clean also specializes in mold remediation.

We recently had the opportunity to give a carpet cleaning demonstration for a local Minneapolis business group. Live demonstrations are a special thing and we hope it shows you never should have to endure unsightly carpet stains in your home or office.

On average, we see and clean around 8-10 different carpet types each month. For this demonstration, we included two common carpet types, an olefin berber and a polyester cut pile. The carpets were soiled liberally with mud stains, soda pop, and ashes from the BBQ and the stains were given a chance to set.

Pre-treatment for carpet cleaning involves application of Bio-Kleen, an all natural traffic lane cleaner. Once pre-treated, a professional grade shampooer lifts the dirt out of the deep spots in the carpet. Next, the carpet is thoroughly rinsed clean using truck mounted steam extraction, leaving it free of any residue. The high powered vacuum keeps contact of water with the carpet to a minimum.

Some stains we encounter are tougher to remove from the carpet. In these cases, extra passes with the equipment and specialized cleaning solutions are used and most stains we are able to remove. Depending upon humidity and airflow, carpet typically takes between 4 and 10 hours to dry completely. See the photos below for the final result of the demonstration.

After the demonstration, people are often amazed at how different the carpet looks. When they touch the carpet, it feels clean – almost like new. At Green Clean, the carpet cleaning minneapolis specialists, <del datetime="2012-03-27T10:02" cite="mailto:Joe"> </del>we apply our years of experience and expertise to every floor we encounter in order to get the best results – even when it’s just a demo.

Green Clean has provided quality service for carpet cleaning and restoration services in the Twin Cities area since 1996. Call these carpet cleaning Minneapolis specialists today for a free, no obligation estimate over the phone or at your residential or commercial location.

The summer is upon us finally. With the added heat and humidity we have been receiving many calls on pet odors in carpets and flooring. Educating our customers is very important to us. Here are some of the ideas and procedures that we recommend.

The first steps should always be the preventive steps. Here are a few preventive steps to follow.

1) Make the area as unavailable or unattractive as possible.

2) Make the area where they should go more attractive.

3) Research potty training techniques or even retrain your pet.

4) Support your pet in a positive manner as you train.

Steps to follow if you have staining or odors.

1) Always remember to saturate the area through the carpet fibers, through the carpet padding and into the sub flooring.

2) Always use an enzyme based product for best results.

3) Mix proper ratios of product and water, treating the area at least 2-3 times.

4) Do not use vinegar and baking soda. These will change the PH balance of the stain.

5) When all else fails, call a professional like Green Clean.

Spring is not only a traditional time of year to clean your house, but also a time to celebrate young graduates from high school and college. As you prepare your home for the many guests you anticipate attending your child’s graduation party, remember one of your home’s largest thriving environments for dust, bacteria, and other allergens-your carpet.

In Minnesota, we have the wonderful opportunity of enjoying all four seasons. With that, we get to spend many hours indoors throughout the harsh cold temperature and snowy blizzards. Come springtime, Minnesotans enjoy opening the windows and cleaning the house top to bottom. After all, we have just spent the last 4 months in a home that has accumulated allergens and bacteria, thus reducing indoor air quality.

Regular vacuuming is highly recommended to maintain your carpet’s appearance. Because you have made a large investment in your home with your carpet, it is important to have your carpets professionally cleaned by IICRC Certified technicians every 12-18 months. Regular carpet maintenance increases its longevity, your indoor air quality, and the happiness of your mother-in-law when she comes to your son or daughter’s graduation party.
