Summer bailed out on us fast this year.
The sudden cooler temps are great, but the chill in the air makes it seem like Halloween is right around the corner.
Do you remember how much fun Halloween was as a kid? One of my favorite costumes was Frankenstein. Not all that inventive but I enjoyed laughing after scaring my sister and thinking that mom was really afraid when I jumped out in front of her.
What’s not so funny to me is when “monsters” pull up to your curb in a home service company van and scare or scam people out of their money. The only costume these monsters wear is a uniform. Kind of like a wolf in a sheep suit.
Here’s a story about an Air Duct Cleaning Company “monster.” These rip-off artists give an entire industry a bad name because of their lack of ethics. Joe Gagnon, The Appliance Doctor, nails it.
- Clearing the air in your home takes time. It can’t be done in less than two hours if it’s done well. That’s because it should take a substantial amount of time to set up correctly to do the job, as well as to do the job right. There’s way more dust in the average home than you can imagine. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (“NADCA”) says that, “On average, forty pounds of dust is generated per year, in a 1,500 square foot home.”
- If a non-reputable air duct cleaning company does a poor job, they can make an existing problem worse by loosening dirt, mold spores, and other debris in your home air duct system and then just letting it sit there. This could adversely affect family members with allergies or asthma when it recirculates through your HVAC system.
It bugs me when I read about things like what happened to Joe Gagnon’s friends, so I was happy to learn that Dateline also did a great expose showing homeowners how to avoid air duct cleaning scams.
You may not even need your air ducts cleaned at all. It normally needs to be done only about once every five years or so unless health concerns or remodeling projects dictate doing it more often. Be sure to keep good home maintenance records.
Air Duct Cleaning Company monsters will do their best to scam you by either scaring you or using bait-and-switch methods to get you to part with your hard-earned money. You can often recognize them before they even show up at your door. This is because their coupons give them away with offers too good to be true. The NADCA shares more on this subject.
The best way to find an honest air duct cleaning company is to get a referral from a friend or another home service provider you trust. Give us a call, and we’ll be happy to connect you to a trusted referral partner. By the way, getting your carpet and upholstery cleaned at the same time you clean your home air ducts makes great sense time-wise and for maximizing results.
