How to Prevent Mold in Your Basement

April showers make most people think of May flowers. Our water damage repair minds turn to basement flooding and mold remediation, however.

We watched it rain last week knowing full well what might happen. Our emergency crews were plenty busy between removing ice dams and water damage restoration projects.

Winter was hard this year. It will be awhile before the ground thaws completely.

Water still has few places to go. It chooses the easiest route, which is downward into cracks and fissures in your home’s foundation.

Your best course of action is to check your home’s basement floor at regular intervals as the thaw progresses. Don’t stop, though, if you see only dry cement flooring.

Be sure to:

  • Check closets, corners, and carpeted areas.
  • Take a close look at baseboards and drywall.
  • Feel for damp areas.
  • Do this under heavy furniture, as well.

If you find no water or excessive moisture, count your blessings.

If you do detect an issue, move quickly.

Call an IICRC certified restoration professional to confirm your findings and to assess what the next best steps will be. Mold can form quickly and may create health hazards including possible major allergic reactions.

If you do have a water problem, immediate mitigation is normally in order. There are always exceptions of course, but you don’t want to take chances with your health or home investment. Call us at 763-789-9600763-789-9600 for more information.
